AMATERASU IN THE CAVE

From time to time, I’ll be taking a break from Edo-Tōkyō place names and history to explore some of the myths associated with the rise of the Yamato State. These myths reflect centuries of an emerging culture and polity based around the imperial clan during the Yayoi Period. They were compiled during the Kofun Period to legitimize the status of the Yamato Court, but these stories give us a look into the religion and history of this mysterious time and the traditions that persist today in Shintō and modern cultural practices.
